Inside Guantanamo Prison - 01 Aug 2013
Images from the archive relating to the prison used to house detainees at Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base in Cuba. Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahri slammed U.S. treatment of hunger striking inmates at Guantanamo Bay and said the group would spare no effort to free them, according to an audio recording posted on the Internet on Wednesday.

He did not elaborate on what al Qaeda intended to do, but militants have in the past kidnapped Westerners and sought to trade them for jailed comrades.

Some 166 men, most of whom were rounded up in counter-terrorism operations since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, are currently being held at the military base. Many have been on hunger strike to protest their indefinite detention, with some being force-fed.

Portraits of Yemeni inmates at Guantanamo Bay are held up by relatives during a protest to demand their release, outside the U.S. embassy in Sanaa April 1, 2013. The detention camp at the Guantanamo Bay U.S. Naval Base in eastern Cuba holds 166 men captured in counterterrorism operations. Nearly all have been held for 11 years without charge. The Barack Obama administration has cleared more than half the Guantanamo prisoners for release or transfer, but the U.S. Congress has blocked efforts to close the detention camp and made it increasingly difficult to resettle Guantanamo prisoners. Many are Yemenis whom the U.S. will not repatriate at this time because of instability in that country. REUTERS/Khaled Abdullah (YEMEN - Tags: POLITICS CRIME LAW)

The U.S. Supreme Court is preparing a potential landmark ruling that could determine the fate of the military tribunals created by President George W. Bush to try Guantanamo prisoners for war crimes. The ruling by the nation's highest court, which is expected later this week, will be one of the most significant presidential war powers cases since World War Two and could determine whether the tribunals are lawful. Four suspected al Qaeda fighters will be formally charged with war crimes this week as the U.S. military opens the first legal hearings for foreign prisoners captured during the war in Afghanistan and held at a remote U.S. Navy base in Cuba. Beginning on Tuesday, the prisoners from Australia, Sudan and Yemen will appear separately, unshackled and in civilian clothing before a panel of five U.S. officers who will read the charges against them at the arraignments, officials at the Guantanamo base said on Sunday. U.S. Supreme Court justices on April 20, 2004 sharply questioned the U.S. President George W. Bush administration's detention of enemy combatants at what their lawyer termed a "lawless enclave" at Guantanamo Bay without access to the courts, in the first big legal test of the war on terrorism. The justices seemed deeply divided over whether Bush had the legal authority to order the indefinite holding of foreign citizens captured abroad while denying them the right to challenge their detention in court.
