California Governor Schwarzenegger appears before supporters in Beverly Hills.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger makes a point during a speech to supporters at a post-election gathering of Republican supporters November 2, 2004 in Beverly Hills, California. U.S. President George W. Bush moved tantalizingly close to victory over Democratic Sen. John Kerry and re-election to a second term in the White House on Tuesday, but questions over provisional ballots in Ohio delayed a final verdict. In a scenario that evoked memories of the prolonged election recount in Florida in 2000, the Kerry campaign said it would not concede the potentially decisive state of Ohio until all votes, including an unknown number of provisional ballots, were counted. Without a win in Ohio, Kerry would need to win Nevada, a state won by Bush in 2000, and hold the undecided states of Wisconsin, Iowa and New Mexico to manage a 269-269 electoral tie.
