A boy with a Mexican flag, stained with paint to resemble blood, lies down in a chalk outline representing the body of a crime victim during a protest in Mexico City November 28, 2012. People gathered at the Estela de Luz monument to protest against the government of Mexico's President Felipe Calderon who has been in power for six years. The turbulent presidency of Calderon comes to a close on December 1, six years after he ordered an offensive against drug cartels which led to a spike in violent crime and left at least 60,000 people dead and thousands more missing. A forensic technician brushes a dental piece belonging to a young woman found during an exhumation at a clandestine cemetery in Villa Madrir, about 30 km north of San Salvador, May 23, 2012. Authorities were looking for the body of a young man missing since 2011, and who presumably was killed by members of the Mara Salvatrucha gang, after they received a tip, but instead found the body of a 16 to 17-year old girl. Authorities have found some 614 bodies in mass graves, shafts and wells since 2005, 85 per cent of them being underage, 80 per cent women and 99 per cent were members or somehow related to gangs, according to the statistics of the Attorney General's Office. According to United Nations data, El Salvador has recently tallied a homicide rate of 66 per 100,000 people, one of the highest in the world. A girl walks past policemen patrolling the Rocinha Slum during an operation to find a man, who killed a policeman during a shootout at one of the slum's alleys in Rio de Janeiro April 4, 2012. According to local media, nine people were killed in Rocinha in the last two months during a dispute on the control of the drug traffic. Three thousand troops, backed by helicopters and armored vehicles, occupied Rio de Janeiro's largest slum without firing a shot on November 13, the biggest step in the Brazilian city's bid to improve security and end the reign of drug gangs. The occupation of Rocinha, a notorious hillside "favela" that overlooks some of Rio's swankiest areas, is a crucial part of the city's preparations to host soccer's World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics two years later. The letter "Z" is seen painted on a hill next to the toll booth at the freeway between Monterrey and Torreon, in the Mexican state of Coahuila March 13, 2010. The "Z" refers to the Zetas drug cartel. In just four years, Monterrey, a manufacturing city of 4 million people 140 miles (230 km) from the Texan border, has gone from being a model for developing economies to a symbol of Mexico's drug war chaos, sucked down into a dark spiral of gangland killings, violent crime and growing lawlessness. By engulfing Monterrey, home to some of Latin America's biggest companies and where annual income per capita is double the Mexican average at $17,000, the violence shows just how serious the security crisis has become in Mexico, the world's seventh-largest oil exporter and a major U.S. trade partner. Soldiers destroy a marijuana plantation in Amata, on the outskirts of Culiacan in Mexico's northwestern state of Sinaloa, November 30, 2010. By killing or capturing at least seven top drug cartel leaders in the past year, the Mexican government is sending a message: "Kingpins, beware." But without confronting deeper problems of corruption, money laundering, weak police and courts, and overcrowded prisons, taking down capos will have little effect on the lucrative drug trade, instead risking more of the violence that is scaring off some investors, security experts say.
