Ethnically Divided Kosovan Town of Mitrovica - 01 Apr 2013
Recent and archive images of the ethnically divided Kosovan town of Mitrovica. Serbia does not recognise Kosovo's 2008 secession, but is under pressure from the European Union to improve ties and help overcome a split between Kosovo's Albanians and a Serb enclave in the north over which Belgrade retained de facto control.

The status of the enclave is at the heart of EU-mediated talks aimed at "normalising ties" between the two countries. The Serb north's rejection of Kosovo sovereignty has left Kosovo split down ethnic lines, a war wound that has long dragged on the hopes of the Balkans to join Europe's mainstream and still carries the potential to destabilise the region.

Serbian President Boris Tadic called on Serbs in the former province of Kosovo on Tuesday to abandon roadblocks in the lawless north, saying the impasse was damaging Belgrade's bid to join the European Union. The call followed violent clashes between Serbs and NATO peacekeepers on Monday in which more than 20 Austrian and German soldiers were wounded, including two by gunfire, and dozens of Serbs were hurt. Two men sit on the balcony of the house with a banner near the road blockade in the village of Rudare near Mitrovica August 6, 2011. Kosovo and Serbia said on Friday they had reached a temporary deal to ease tensions in Kosovo's north and allow NATO to continue to guard two border posts following recent violence. However, ethnic Serbs in Kosovo's north refused to accept a key part of the deal and end a blockade of main roads imposed in a dispute that is essentially about who controls the area. A Kosovo Serb priest walks with a U.N. policeman through a demolished church at a graveyard in the ethnically divided Kosovo town of Mitrovica March 1, 2008. Around 120 Serbs from the north of Mitrovica crossed the river into the mainly Albanian south to pay respects to lost loved ones on the winter 'Zadusnice' -- the Serbian Orthodox equivalent of All Souls' Day -- at the Orthodox graveyard. Vandalised since the war, the graveyard has fallen into disrepair. REUTERS/Marko Djurica (KOSOVO)
