Chilean police took mug shots and fingerprinted Pinochet for the first time on December 28, 2005, in a procedure his lawyer called "insulting" as the former dictator faced charges in a landmark human rights case. Judge Victor Montiglio, who is investigating the disappearance of leftists under Pinochet's 1973-1990 rule, requested the shots and prints to create a police file on the former strongman, court officials said. According to a spokesperson, the Vatican has no intentions for the time being of mediating in the controversy over the arrest in Britain of former president Augusto Pinochet. Speculation about the Vatican's interest in the Pinochet case surfaced earlier this week after Chilean deputy foreign minister Mariano Fernandez held talks with the Vatican's Secretary of State Cardinal Agostino Casaroli. The British High Court ruled that Pinochet enjoyed immunity from prosecution because he was Chilean head of state at the time of the crimes alleged against him by a Spanish judge. The ruling is currently being appealed before the House of Lords.

toppled the government of President Salvador Allende. The date is still
so significant to Chileans that they seem oblivious to the attacks two
years ago on the same day in the United States. Pinochet, now 87, ill
and homebound, has been pushed offstage. Even loyalists have distanced
themselves from the former strongman whose repressive regime took 3,000
lives, tortured thousands and pushed thousands more into exile.
