crowd looks at the body of a suspected robber killed by a mob in the Liberian capital Monrovia, March 22, 2005. Fourteen years of civil war have reduced Liberia's justice system to a shambles of overflowing prisons, endless waits for trial and lynching that point to a virtual collapse in the state's ability to enforce law and order. But as candidates gear up for presidential and parliamentary elections on October 11 -- the centrepiece of a peace deal signed by warring factions in 2003 -- promises of judicial reform have largely been absent from campaign speeches. Local vigilantes inspect a taxi at a makeshift roadblock on a main seaside road as midnight approaches in Alexandria February 2, 2011. Supporters of President Hosni Mubarak, throwing petrol bombs, wielding sticks and charging on horses and camels, fiercely attacked demonstrators in Cairo on Wednesday after the army told protesters to clear the streets. Anti-Mubarak protesters hurled stones back and said the attackers were police in plain clothes, a charge the Interior Ministry denied; the Egyptian government rejected international calls for the leader to end his 30-year-rule now. In the past three years Hungary's Roma, or gypsies, have been shot dead in their homes, killed by hand grenades and attacked with petrol bombs. Now they are going to be policed by right-wing vigilantes. The far-right Jobbik party, which gained its first toehold in parliament last year on a right-wing tidal wave that put the Fidesz party in power, will field 200 vigilantes in the hardluck northeastern town of Hajduhadhaz next month.
