U.S. Army Set to Implement New Tattoo Rules - 26 Sep 2013
A selection of images from the archive showing U.S. soldiers with tattoos.

Tattoos are everywhere these days, with no body parts off limits. But the U.S. Army may be asking new recruits to roll up their tattoo sleeves as part of a new uniform policy. A regulation to ban tattoos that are visible below the elbow and knee and above the neckline is under consideration, the armed forces newspaper Stars and Stripes reported.

U.S. army veteran Lori Goodwin displays a tattoo on her arm outside the home of Nadia McCaffrey in Tracy, California October 25, 2010. Goodwin, 28, joined the military in 2000 out of high school with the aim of eventually going to college and served in Iraq from July 2007 to October 2008. Beyond the additional nearly $1 trillion two prominent economists estimate it will cost just to treat veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq for the next 40 years, the potential human cost is huge. Since the war began in October 2001, there have been periodic reports about substance abuse, depression, domestic violence, suicide, homelessness and violent crime among traumatized veterans of Afghanistan and Iraq.
