Images from Iraq where national elections will be held on April 30. The vote this month and the race to form a new government will be contentious, with multiple Shi'ite lists vying for the premiership - Sunnis and Kurds looking for plum posts - and Prime Minister Nouri al Maliki determined to stay in office.

Candidates in the largest Sunni province of Anbar, Iraq where security forces are locked in a four-month battle with Al Qaeda offshoot the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), continued their low-profile campaigns ahead of the April 30 elections. In the streets of Ramadi city where fighting erupted following an Iraqi police operation targeting a Sunni Muslim protest camp last December, there is little sign of campaigning. Rabba Mohammed , a female candidate, said on April 20 that the recent situation in the Anbar province was a key reason for her to run. REUTERS/Ali al-Mashhadani (IRAQ - Tags: ELECTIONS POLITICS)

Sheik Qais Khazaali, main leader of militant group Asaib Ahl Haq (League of the Righteous), speaks to his supporters to announce his election platform and to promote candidates of Al-Sadiqoon during a ceremony in Baghdad April 25, 2014. The elections, a key test for the country's fledgling democracy, will take place against a backdrop of increasing violence and fighting in western Anbar province to expel al-Qaeda linked groups. The run-up to the national election on April 30 has been marred by attacks. A series of explosions killed 28 people and wounded more than 40 at Asaib's rally in Iraq on Friday, police and medical sources said. Picture taken April 25, 2014. Iraqi women candidates attend a debate forum in Baghdad, April 19, 2014. As Iraq's general election draws closer, both men and women are vying for seats in the country's parliament. But this year's election, the first one after the withdrawal of U.S troops in 2011, has seen an increase in the number of female candidates. According to an Iraqi election official, women make up around 30 to 35 percent of the candidates in the April 30 election. "The total number of nominees in the 2010 parliamentary election was about 690, including 200 or 199 female candidates. As for the upcoming election the number of nominees is 740 to 780, the number of women candidates is 221. Picture taken April 19, 2014.
