Argentine ex-president Raul Alfonsin is seen in Buenos Aires June 20, 2007. Alfonsin, 82, who guided Argentina's return to democracy in the 1980s after seven years of brutal military rule but failed to stave off a deep economic crisis, died on March 31, 2009, of lung cancer. Alfonsin was president from 1983 to 1989 and won international admiration for putting on trial and jailing the former military leaders who tortured and killed thousands of suspected leftists in a vicious "dirty war." FILE PHOTO 1999 - Former Argentine President Raul Alfonsin has broken several ribs and is breathing with mechanical help after he was involved in a road accident June 17 in south-western Rio Negro province, a medical report said. Alfonsin, 72, was admitted to an intensive care unit after the accident and his condition is unstable, said the medical report obtained by Reuters.
