Food that contains approximately 8,200 calories that Samuel, 47, would typically consume in one day before he had brain surgery following a stroke, is displayed for a photograph at his home in Mexico City, Mexico, February 3, 2021. "I regret not taking care of myself, on having annual check-ups like blood tests to check my sugar levels, cholesterol," said Samuel. "With obesity, I developed diabetes and had an operation on my head for a blood clot due to a stroke." Nutritionist Betzabe Salgado, who works at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gomez, calculated the calorie amount. REUTERS/Carlos Jasso SEARCH "JASSO OBESITY" FOR THIS STORY. The Wider Image: Temptation everywhere: Mexican children struggle with obesity
Food that contains approximately 6,600 calories that Daniela typically consumes in one day as she tries to lose weight while taking part in a weight loss program, is displayed for a photograph at her family home in Texcoco, Mexico, January 8, 2021. Daniela was 11 years old when a doctor told her she would not live more than another six or seven years. Weighing 75 kilos (165 lb), about twice the recommended weight for her age, she had just suffered a minor heart attack. That was two years ago. She still remembers the pain in her chest. Then she was also diagnosed with diabetes. Daniela knows the disease well: she watched eight family members die from its complications. "The doctor told me that I'll die, that I'll not even turn 18 years old," she said. Now Daniela is 14 years old and weighs 81 kilos. Reuters was unable to contact the doctor, who treated Daniela at a different facility previously, but her current caseworker confirmed Daniela's account. "Instead of losing weight, I put on more," Daniela added. Nutritionist Betzabe Salgado, who works at Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gomez, where Daniela is undergoing a weight loss program, calculated the calorie amount. Pricila had a gastric sleeve surgery, during which a part of the stomach is removed, for weight loss at 16. Realization hit her when aged 15 she weighed 113 kilos, equal to her father. Pricila, who has a metabolic disease, said even with exercise and a nutrition plan her weight loss had stalled, making her a candidate for the surgery. "When I tried to lose weight, there was temptation everywhere," she said. Pricila now weighs 83 kilos. "It was a real feat, especially because I was so used to eating junk food, sweets, all the time." REUTERS/Carlos Jasso SEARCH "JASSO OBESITY" FOR THIS STORY. SEARCH "WIDER IMAGE" FOR ALL STORIES.
