North American meat workers fall sick as supplies dwindle
Processors including Smithfield Foods, JBS USA and Tyson Foods temporarily closed about 20 U.S. meat plants as the coronavirus infected thousands of employees, prompting meatpackers and grocers to warn of shortages. Some plants have resumed limited operations as workers afraid of getting sick stay home.

The U.S. meat industry has seen about 5,000 coronavirus infections and 20 deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In Canada, larger outbreaks have hit Alberta and Quebec meat plants, including one Cargill beef processing plant in High River, Alberta that was forced to close down in early May because hundreds of workers had become infected with the coronavirus. The plant represents about 36% of Canada's total beef processing capacity.
