Obama Urges Closure - 29 Jan 2014
Archive images relating to the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay. President Barack Obama told Americans on Tuesday that 2014 should be the year to finally close the prison as the United States winds down its military role in Afghanistan and shifts away from a "permanent war footing."

In his annual State of the Union address, Obama renewed his old vow - dating back to the start of his presidency five years ago - to shut the internationally condemned jail at the U.S. Naval Base in Cuba, and he called on Congress for further action to help him do so.

The U.S. Supreme Court is preparing a potential landmark ruling that could determine the fate of the military tribunals created by President George W. Bush to try Guantanamo prisoners for war crimes. The ruling by the nation's highest court, which is expected later this week, will be one of the most significant presidential war powers cases since World War Two and could determine whether the tribunals are lawful. President Barack Obama may set a one-year deadline to close the controversial U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, according to an unsigned draft executive order that may bolster the U.S. image abroad. Obama pledged during his election campaign to shutter the prison camp, which became a blot on the United States' human rights record and a symbol of detainee abuse and detention without charge under the Bush administration.
