Protesting Through Art - 21 Oct 2014
Reuters photographer Maxim Zmeyev photographed Russian artist Pyotr Pavlensky cutting off a part
of his ear at the Centre for Social and Forensic Psychiatry in Moscow. In an action titled "Segregation,"
Pavlensky protested against the use of psychiatry for politically motivated purposes. He said he cut off
his earlobe to demonstrate how authorities could "cut off" an individual from society, using psychiatric
and medical diagnoses to intern people in penitentiary hospitals.
