World Environment Day - Food Bank SOS - 05 June 2013
Reuters photographer Kacper Pempel spent time documenting the work of Food Bank SOS, an organisation that distributes food donations to charities, including food that would have otherwise gone to waste. Wanda, a 71-year-old volunteer collects food from farmers at Bronisze agricultural market, and Food Bank SOS passes it onto charities, such as the Camillian Mission, which uses it to help the needy. Cutting the amount of food that goes to waste is the special theme of this year's World Environment Day on June 5. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that about a third of all the food produced for human consumption worldwide every year is wasted.
