In Limbo in the Serbian Forest - 29 Nov 2013
Hundreds of asylum seekers who have been living rough in a forest in Serbia, are among a rising tide of migrants, mainly from Africa and the Middle East, who have been trying to make their way through the countries of the former Yugoslavia to other parts of Europe. Serbia has been ill-prepared to receive them, leaving many, quite literally, out in the cold.

An asylum seeker smokes a cigarette as he stands with his friends in a forest near the asylum center in the village of Bogovadja, some 70 km (43 miles) from Serbia's capital Belgrade November 13, 2013. With winter approaching, hundreds of asylum seekers from Africa and the Middle East are living in a forest in Serbia without access to basic amenities, a sign of the Balkan state's failure to tackle a rising tide of migration. Some 300 migrants, who have legally sought asylum, are camping in a forest in central Serbia because the country's two asylum centres are full. Picture taken November 13, 2013. With winter approaching, hundreds of asylum seekers from Africa and the Middle East are living in the forests of Serbia without access to basic amenities due to a dramatic failure by the Balkan state to respond to a rising tide of migration.
