Japan's opposition Shinshinto (New Frontier Party) parliament members continue staging a sit-in in front of a door of the parliamentary committee room for the sixth day in Tokyo on the night of March 9. The parliament members are demanding that the government drop from the 1996/97 budget a plan to spend 685 billion yen ($6.52 billion) in tax money to help wind up ailing mortgage firms. The opposition party demanded that Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto call general elections and will continue the sit-in to block passage of the annual budget.
