ETHNIC TURK PASSES AN OLD MOSLEM CEMETERY IN BULGARIA
A Bulgarian ethnic Turk, passes through an old Moslem cemetery in the Rodopi mountain region near the town of Kardzali, some 230 km north-east of Sofia on May 18. Bulgaria has some 800,000 Moslem ethnic Turks in a population of 8,4 million. The Turks were the victims of a communist-era assimilation campaign to force them to take Slavic names that led to a mass exodus to Turkey in 1989. Bulgaria's economic crisis has brought hard times to Bulgarian Turks living in the poorest areas of the country.
