South Africa became the first country in Africa to destroy stockpiles of anti-personnel landmines, blowing up 4,700 of them at a military base May 21. The goverment urged others to follow suit, and South Africa Defence minister Joe Modise told repoters at the Alkantpan weapons test range, that by October all 250,00 anti-personnel landmines will be destroyed in 18 explosions.
