Private security guards stand watch outside a local government office that was gutted by a car bomb detonated by Maoist Shining Path guerillas in Lima, May 15. The guerillas pulled up in three cars and fought with police before setting-off 88 pounds (40 kgs) of dynamite from a van, wounding at least eight officers and destroying nearly one square block. Car bombs have been a common mode of attack in Peru during 17 years of guerilla violence that has cost at least 30,000 lives and $25 billion in infrastructure damage.
