Mexican soldiers prepare a stretcher for any emergencies July 1 in the village of Xalizintla, near the snow-capped Popocatepetl volcano, following the biggest eruption of the volcano in 72 years. Popocatepetl, known in the local Indian tongue Nahuatl as Smoking Mountain, belched out a huge cloud of ash and gas that reached Mexico City, just 33 miles away.
