MARACANA STADIUM FEATURE
Paper streamers fly as fans of the Brazilian club Flamengo cheer as their team takes the field for another match at Maracana, the world's largest soccer stadium. Built in 1950 as the main World Cup venue, Maracana has enough space for approximately 150,000 fans, and Flamengo is regarded as having the largest soccer following in Brazil. Revered in Brazil as soccer' "holy ground," more than 100,000 packed the stadium for the recent national championship game, won by Rio de Janeiro club Vasco da Gama.
