Fireworks light up the Stalin-era Palace of Culture in the centre of Poland's capital Warsaw late on October 1. The display was staged by a GSM telephone operator to mark its first anniversary of operations. Use of mobile phones in Poland has grown beyond all expectations and quickly outstripped that in other former Soviet bloc countries in the region.
