A Chinese farmer, on his way home after a day's work in the fields during autumn harvest, passes the restored Xianling Ming tomb at Shisanling or "Thirteen Tombs", 50 kilometres northwest of Beijing October 5. An area of 40-square-kilometres hosts the graves of 13 of the 16 Ming emperors, one of whom, according to legend, had 16 of his concubines buried alive with his corpse. The area is now a popular tourist attraction famed for tranquility and rural scenes.
