HISTORIAN IENAGA SPEAKS TO REPORTERS AFTER WINNING TEXTBOOK SUIT IN TOKYO
Japanese historian Saburo Lenaga watches his step as he enters a Tokyo hall for a news conference following his victory in a textbook censorship case August 29. Japan's Supreme Court ruled that government censorship of references in school textbooks to a World War Two germ warfare group known as Unit 731 were ''unlawful" and ordered the government to pay him a token 400,000 yen ($3,390) in compensation. Helping the 83-year-old Ienaga walk is an unidentified supporter of the historian in his suit.
