PALESTINIANS DEMONSTRATE IN BALATA REFUGEE CAMP TO MARK BEGINNING OF AL-NAKBA.
Palestinian demonstrators carry posters that read " fifty years of occupation and under the tent " during a demonstration May 11 in the West Bank refugee camp of Balata marking the beginning of the "al-Nakba" commemorations. May 14 marks fifty years since the declaration of the state of Israel and its invasion by five Arab armies in 1948. Some 700,000 Palestinians went into exile becoming refugees, and Palestinians have called this exile "al-Nakba", or "The Catastrophe". Demonstrations are called throughout the Palestinian Authority this week to mark the 50th anniversary of "al-Nakba." Palestinians consider the Jewish settlements a major stumbling block in the Middle East peace equation.
