HURRICANE DAMAGE IN NEVIS.
A tangled mess of wires from downed power lines is shown September 21 outside the Red Cross in Charlestown, the main town in Nevis, in the wake of Hurricane Georges. There is no power available anywhere in the area, except by private generator. Georges, fresh from hammering the Virgin Islands and the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, was expected to march across Puerto Rico - population 3.8 million - overnight and threaten the Dominican Republic, Haiti, the Bahamas and Cuba in the coming days.
