Giro d'Italia race leader Italian Marco Pantani is congratulated at the end of the 34-km time-trial 21th stage of the race June 6 from Mendrisio to Lugano. Pantani had the 3rd best time while Ukrainian Serguei Gontchar won the stage with a time of 39 minutes and 54 seconds. Marco Pantani retained the over-all race lead.
