SYDNEY UNIVERSITY PREPARE TO AUTOPSY MUMMY.
Professor Mark Spigelman (C), Visiting Professor at University College, London is joined by his brother Allan (R), Professor of Surgical Science at University of Newcastle as they prepare with conservator Wendy Reade to perform an autopsy on Meruah, a female mummy thought to date from the 21st Dynasty, about 1000BC at Sydney University May 18. The university is performing a battery of medical tests on the mummified bodies of the three unrelated ancients to find out why they died. They hope the tests will give a snapshot of their lifestyle and give insights into the evolution of diseases such as cancer and syphilis.
