PARAPLEGIC GERMAN CITIZEN ARRESTED FOR DRUG SMUGGLING LAY IN BOGOTA HOSPITAL BED
German citizen Andreas Scholten lays in his bed in Bogota's San Ignacio clinic, March 26. Scholten, a paraplegic, was arrested last September as he tried to smuggle 17.6 pounds (8 kg) of cocaine out of Colombia in his wheelchair. As a result of grisly jail conditions, he contracted gangrene and has had part of his scrotum and rectum removed in an operation to save his life. He is still under guard by heavily-armed prison officials.
