Pope John Paul II waves to the new cardinals after he gave them the red berretta, a four-cornered red hat during the Consistory ceremony in St. Peter's Square February 21. Putting one of his final stamps on the group that will elect his successor, Pope John Paul on Saturday created 22 new cardinals and asked them to help him guide to the Catholic Church in the next millennium.
