COLOMBIAN POLICE FRISKS A VOTER IN GUASCA DURING PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS.
A Colombian policeman frisks a villager in the small town of Guasca, 50 kms north of the capital, before he casts his vote for president June 21. Colombians are choosing a successor to President Ernesto Samper, whose legacy after four traumatic years in office includes a drug corruption scandal and a breakdown in public order. Public opinion surveys predict a cliffhanger runoff between Samper's handpicked candidate, Horacio Serpa of the ruling Liberal Party, and Conservative Andres Pastrana.
