GUATEMALAN MUSEUM DIRECTOR HOLDS PART OF REPATRIATED MAYAN COLLECTION.
Director of Guatemala's Musuem of Anthropology and History, Juan Antonio Valdez, holds a piece of pre-Hispanic burial urn in his hands October 19. The pottery is part of a collection of 300 Mayan pieces found near the capital which were sent to France in 1948 for repair and restoration, but Guatemala was unable to pay for them to be shipped back. The pieces were repatriated after France offered to pay half the costs, as a gesture of goodwill ahead of President Chirac's visit to Guatemala next month.
