(CSU) talks to Laurenz Meyer secretray general of the CSU's sister
party Christian Democratic Union party (CDU) prior to his departure
from a CDU board meeting in Magdeburg January 12, 2002. Stoiber, 60,
the experienced governor of Bavaria will lead the conservative
opposition parties in their effort to defeat Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder's of the Social Democrats in September general elections.
Stoiber won the nomination after the leader of the largest opposition
party, Angela Merkel, withdrew her bid, ending a two-way battle over
the conservatives' direction marked by intrigue and backbiting. Merkel
