A BULGARIAN ETHNIC TURKISH WOMAN STRINGS TOBACCO LEAVES IN RHODOPE
MOUNTAINS.
A Bulgarian ethnic Turkish woman strings tobacco leaves up to dry in
the village of Fotinovo in the Rhodope mountains on July 3, 2002.
Bulgaria is a big producer of tobacco and tobacco products involving
mainly the poor regions of southern Bulgaria populated mainly with
etnic Turks. The small Balkan country has offered an 80 percent stake
in its state tobacco monopoly Bulgartabac and bids which offer to buy
out a bigger part of local tobacco production would be prefered.
