AN AFGHAN CHILD PLAYS ATOP A DESTROYED RUSSIAN AIRFORCE PLANE IN KABUL.
An Afghan child plays atop a destroyed Russian airforce plane in Kabul,
June 27, 2003. Wars and internal conflicts has seen the rugged
country's economy and infrastructure in shambles, with millions of land
mines buried in farm land and factories in ruins. It is estimated that
Afghanistan will need as much as $30 billion over the next decade to
rebuild the infrastructure destroyed during 22 years of war. The Asian
Development bank has recently approved a $150 million loan to
Afghanistan which will be used for repairs and reconstruction of 450
kilometers of primary roads, power transmission lines in the northern
provinces and the electricity distribution system in Kabul.
