July 8, 2003 by Secretary-General Kofi Annan as his special
representative for the troubled African state of Liberia, U.N.
officials said. Klein's appointment came as U.S. President George W.
Bush weighed sending troops to help keep the peace in the country as
part of a multinational force after an urgent plea from Annan.
