AN AFGHAN DEMINIG TEAM MEMBER WORKS ALONG THE DESTROYED HIGHWAY ONE IN
AFGHANISTAN.
An Afghan demining team member works along the dusty Highway One, which
heads to Kandahar and was destroyed by more than 20 years of war and
neglect December 11, 2002. The rebuilding of the road linking Kabul,
Kandahar and Herat is funded by the United States, Japan and Saudi
Arabia and is expected to cost $250 million. Only about 20 kilometres
of the road has been graded and the danger of mines along the old
highway means progress will be slow for some time. REUTERS/Radu
