AFGHAN BOYS AND GIRLS IN CLASSROOM IN KABUL LOOKING AT ADVANCE COPIES
OF UNICEF BOOKS.
Afghan girls and boys take different places in a classroom in the Gulam
Haidar Khan school in Kabul March 17, 2002 as a teacher distributes
advance copies of a new text book printed by UNICEF. Afghan school
children return to their classrooms March 23 after six years of Taliban
rule when girls under nine received no formal schooling and strict
Islamic dogma was taught taking precedence over subjects like maths and
science. UNICEF printed some 4 millions of the texts books to be used
for grades one through three and ISAF is distributing other classroom
materials such as blackboards. REUTERS/Jim Hollander
