ALBANIAN CHILDREN WALK ON TOXIC CONTAMINATED LAND IN DURRES.
Albanian children walk on land polluted by toxic-pesticides, close by
the ruins of a former chemical plant in Porto Romano, a village 5 km
from the port-city of Durres March 24, 2002. This site has high
concetrations of lindane and sulphur, posing great risk to the lives of
nearly 100 families who live there. According to a report published by
the UN Environment Programme, this site is one of the five most
contaminated "hot spots" in Albania. Until now nothing has been done to
get rid of these pesticides, which threaten human life. REUTERS/Arben
