ARGENTINE SCHOOL GIRL COMFORTED WHILE AWAITING WORD ABOUT CLASSMATES
KILLED IN BRIDGE ACCIDENT.
A girl is comforted inside her school in the district of Merlo, a
suburb of Buenos Aires, September 19, 2002. She was part of a group
awaiting further news about classmates that fell into an icy,
fast-moving river in Patagonia on Thursday, in the southern province of
Chubut, 1,000 miles (1,600 km) south of Buenos Aires, after a wooden
footbridge collapsed. At least eight Argentine students and their
teacher tumbled to their deaths, and authorities said one person
remained missing after the students, aged 12 and 13, crowded onto the
fragile bridge to take a group picture during a field trip.
