Poor Argentines beg for change from pedestrians in front of a closed
shop along Santa Fe Avenue, one of Buenos Aires' wealthiest shopping
districts, January 7, 2002. Argentina, which has shed the currency
straitjacket it wore for a decade to ward off inflation while creating
record unemployment and poverty levels, fought to stop devaluation from
bringing a quick return of price rises that could re-ignite unrest.
