in in taxi leaves a Buenos Aires prison, May 22, 2003. Outgoing
Argentine President Eduardo Duhalde pardoned the jailed former
guerrilla leader and a former military coup plotter as a parting
gesture to close the door on the past, with less than a week to go
before he hands power to President-elect Nestor Kirchner. Merlo
spearheaded an attack on a military base outside Buenos Aires in 1989
