ARGENTINE SHIP IRIZAR DEPARTS TO ASSIST VESSEL OLDENDORFF TRAPPED IN
THE ANTARTIC.
The Argentine ice-breaker ship "Almirante Irizar" prepares to depart
from a Buenos Aires dock, June 24, 2002. The ship will be on a rescue
mission to assist 79 Russian scientists and 28 crew aboard the
German-owned vessel Magdalena Oldendorff, trapped in the Antarctic ice
since June 16, 2002. The Almirante Irizar is expected to reach the edge
of the icefields in about 15 days, before worsening weather in the
Antarctic winter arrives. The 107 people on board have rationed food
and fuel to last until July 15. REUTERS/Enrique Marcarian
