Sacred masks sit on an altar before a performance of an ancient Mayan play in Rabinal, Guatemala January 24, 2006. Almost extinguished by army massacres and repression during Guatemala's 36-year civil war, the "Rabinal Achi" is flourishing again after being named a masterpiece by the United Nations. Anthropologists believe the play has been performed since 1400 A.D., making it the oldest in the Americas, and tells the story of a conflict between two post-classic Mayan kingdoms five hundred years earlier.
