NORTHERN ALLIANCE SOLDIERS INSPECT ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUNS IN KABUL.
Northern Alliance soldiers inspect anti-aircraft guns atop an APC in
the military base in Kabul January13, 2002.Afghanistan will keep about
1,500 troops in Kabul even after it has cleared the capital of
thousands of armed men in agreement with international peacekeepers, a
senior Defence Ministry official said on Sunday. Afghanistan's new
leaders originally agreed to withdraw all military units from the
capital, but a lack of police and concern about rising crime have
prompted the authorities to keep some troops in Kabul to help out with
policing. REUTERS/Oleg Popov
