Goulburn, Australia
A Common Wombat, one of three species of wombat, lies dead on the side of a highway with its belly marked with a red cross just outside the city of Goulburn, located 150 km (93 miles) southwest of Sydney, May 24, 2007. The largest-sized species, the Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat known as Australia's rarest marsupial, with only a single colony of around 110 living in a fenced-off area in the northern state of Queensland, has been listed in an American scientific magazine as an animal that faces extinction within a decade.
