American millionaire adventurer Steve Fossett poses holding an
Aboriginal boomerang he was presented with by local townspeople next to
his balloon capsule as final preparations for take-off begin in the
township of Northam, located 100 kilometres (62 miles) east of Perth
August 4, 2001. Fossett's sixth attempt to complete the first solo
circumnavigation of the Earth comes nearly two months after his attempt
to launch from Kalgoorlie ended when a gust of wind ripped the balloon
apart.
