NORWEGIAN AMBASSADOR THORSHEIM TALKS AFTER HIS VISIT TO THE TAMPA.
Norway's Ambassador to Australia Ove Thorsheim talks about the
conditions on the captured Norwegian freighter, the Tampa, after
spending five hours aboard the ship off the coast of Christmas Island
August 31, 2001. Thorsheim said sanitary conditions aboard the ship
were "unsatisfactory" and that the condition of at least three of the
refugees was serious. Thorsheim went to the ship to assess the
condition of the Norwegian crew and over 450 asylum-seeking refugees
who remain aboard the Tampa after Australian authorities took control
of the vessel after it entered territorial waters several days ago.
