HIGH-TECH ARMY DUAL-PURPOSE PROTOTYPE VEHICLE BOWS IN DETROIT.
The Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command's National Automotive Center
unveiled SmarTruck II, a versatile, prototype, multi-purpose vehicle capable
of both counter-terrorism support and domestic security, on January 7, 2003,
at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The heavily armed
SmarTruck II's cockpit and its fighting compartment - that would be the
back-seat area in a civilian sport-ute - are jammed with high-tech systems.
It carries a POINTER unmanned air vehicle, a SPIKE pinpoint laser-guided
missile. It's built on a Chevrolet Silverado platform, REUTERS/Tracy Baker
