Dragoslav Avramovic, former Yugoslav Central bank governor waves to the crowd during an opposition protest in the northern Yugoslav town of Sombor, some 200 km north from Belgrade July 24. Serbian opposition grouping Alliance for Change, which is trying to use public pressure to persuade President [Slobodan Milosevic] to resign, on Saturday proposed a popular former central bank governor to head an interim government. Avramovic, 82, was governor of the Yugoslav Central Bank from 1994 to 1996. Brought in by [Milosevic], he tamed hyperinflation and introduced a new dinar currency and earned huge popularity among the general population.
